Randy & Mia’

This engagement story may be long, but I have so much to say and it will definitely be a more personal one. Excuse me if I sound a little off, I am still in my own bubble floating on Cloud 9 from when I asked the love of my life to marry me. I have been excited to share our love story and journey and can’t think of a better time than now.

Mia and I met March 27, 2012; I just completed my final year as an undergrad at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. My plans when arriving at home in the Valley were to get together with a couple of other friends to celebrate. Evidentially, there were some last minute cancellations, so I ended up getting together with a couple family members. My fiancé, Mia, who was then just a stranger had just finished her sophomore year in college at the University of Texas at Brownsville and was there with her best friend Christina Fonseca who happens to be my cousin. Mia was sitting a couple seats to my left, and she was beautiful, absolutely divine. Barely did I see her face for a few seconds and my world stopped for a moment, and everything blurred into oblivion, everything but her beautiful face. A moment later, she turned towards me and looked back at me. Our eyes met and at that moment, in an instant beyond time frames, I came face to face with a new emotion. As that night went on, we slowly became comfortable in each other’s company, however the spontaneity of our conversations must have led her astray since she mistakenly called me Ryan (my name is Randy). You would have thought I would have walked away like many other men, but her smile kept me intrigued. Well, love at first sight was a good start. But falling in love with Mia was and has been an experience to live for.

We came to the part in our relationship when it was time to go on our first date. My heart was racing as I drove up to her house to pick her up. We went to Chili’s for dinner and afterwards went to go see the midnight premier to the movie the Hobbit. It may have been sudden but I can honestly say I fell in love with her that night. I fell in love with her character, she wasn’t afraid to share a different opinion than me. That really stood out when we were dating, it made her mysterious. I fell in love with her when I realized that her kindness wasn’t just something she showed to me. She was generous and kind toward everyone. She has such a sweet spirit, and has so much innocence and it brought out strong urges in me to protect her, even though it’s funny because she was the one who first told me she wanted to guard my heart for forever. I just never wanted her to ever have to know heartbreak ever again and it was this realization that led me to fall in love. Mia and I continued to date and it was pleasing to see everyone in our families delighted by how well our lives began to successfully blend into one. So much in fact that stories began to circulate amongst our relatives of how we hadn’t met sooner. The aforementioned Christina had brought up the question as to why our first meeting was so recent and not happened before since Mia always attended family events such as parties, Quinceañeras, and family gatherings. It wasn’t until later that Mia and I started feeling in our hearts that we were always destined to be with each other. One day as we were rummaging through family photos with my aunt, Diana Enriquez (a.k.a. Nanis) we all were stunned by the picture of myself standing next to Father Brown at Saint Margaret’s Church as an altar boy and Mia was off to the side sitting in the choir section of our church. We all started putting the pieces together and eventually found another picture of ourselves when I was in college at Sul Ross and she was still in high school we were at Christina’s 16th birthday party and we were all amazed as to the fact that we were always in the same place at the same time, we just never exchanged glances.

By this time Mia and I had already been dating for about a year now and I had been thinking for quite some time on how Mia has really changed my life and made me love life so much more just because she was a part of it. Mia was always so amazing at coming up with creative date ideas, and she loves to make me to do adventurous things like parasailing or skydiving, so I wanted my proposal to her to be just as amazing. It was the day before New Year’s Eve we had been arguing about who to spend the holiday with her family or mine. I had told her I wanted to plan a New Year’s Eve party and invite all our friends and family and dance and drink till the sun came up.Well, the whole thing fell apart. A lot of friends weren’t able to make it, family had other plans. The fighting continued because we still hadn’t come up with an answer on how to divide time equally between two families. What Mia didn’t know was that I had been planning this for 3 months, and had everything right where I wanted it. I talked to all of my friends and family and told them what I was planning on doing and asked them to tell Mia they weren’t able to make it. Mia was all day at work so I went over to her father’s house and formally asked him if he’d allow me to marry his daughter. He looked at me and said, “Welcome to the Family.” The night had came and I was beyond nervous. Only a few family members were there and we all gathered outside around the fire pit. As the 10 second count down began, I reached down into my pocket I quietly stepped behind Mia so she wouldn’t see I was about to get down on one knee. Her dad looked at me and gave me the “signal” and right at the stroke of midnight he lit up two huge fireworks that illuminated the midnight sky. I went down on one knee and patiently waited for what seemed like an eternity for Mia to notice what it was I was doing. The proposal went funnier than I expected because she was trying to reach over to get her “midnight kiss” but almost stumbled over since she still hadn’t noticed I was down on bended knee. She screamed when she realized what was happening. She looked over in awe and the light of the fireworks reflecting in her eyes overwhelmed me with joy and happiness. I then asked her, if shed make me the happiest person in the world and marry me. She whispered in my ear,” Did you ask my dad.” I smiled said yes and she took the ring from my hand and put it on her ring finger. She didn’t even say yes in all the confusion and excitement. Even though the words weren’t spoken we both knew in our hearts it was yes.. I signaled to her Dad and Mom that it was a yes, and all of the previously mentioned friends and family members came out with sparklers in their hands congratulating us. Mia was shocked, her jaw dropped to see that everyone was there the whole time. All cameras were on us. All friends and family members came up to hug and celebrate the New Year with us and we all danced. Man o Man did we dance till about 4 in the morning. I am so blessed to have someone in my life that loves me so much.

I couldn’t have asked for a better best friend, soulmate and companion to spend the rest of my life with. I can’t effectively explain the love I have for my fiancé. There was from day one and continues to be an incredible energy that has drawn and intertwined our souls together. It feels great knowing well be protecting each other into forever and beyond, loving and accepting and understanding each other the way that only a husband and wife truly can.
